1. Connecting using a wired connection

Connection check list:

Nintendo Wii
Wii LAN adapter
Either a broadband modem or wired router (with a spare Ethernet port)
Network Ethernet cable

Steps:

Connect an Ethernet cable from your modem/router.
Turn your Wii OFF and plug the Wii LAN adapter into the USB port at the back of your console.
Plug the Ethernet cable from your modem/router into the Ethernet port on the Wii adapter you plugged in during Step 2.
Turn your Wii ON.
Go to the main Wii menu and click the Wii button in the bottom left-hand corner.
You'll now see the Settings screen. Click Wii Settings.
On the Wii System Settings 1 page click the right arrow (>) to take you to the Wii System Settings 2 page. On the Wii System Settings 2 screen click Internet.
Click Connection Settings.
Click an empty connection slot (this will be shown as 'None').
Then click Wired Connection.
Click OK on the next screen.
Your Wii will then briefly attempt to make a connection with your wired router.
When a successful connection has been made you will see a screen saying 'Connection test was successful'.
You've now connected your Wii!

2. Connecting using a wireless connection

Connection check list:

Nintendo Wii
A wireless broadband router or wired router with a wireless access point attached

Steps:

Go to the main Wii menu and click the Wii button in the bottom left-hand corner.
You'll now see the Settings screen. Click Wii Settings.
On the Wii System Settings 1 page click the right arrow (>) to take you to the Wii System Settings 2 page. On the Wii System Settings 2 screen click Internet.
Click Connection Settings.
On the list click Connection 1.
Then click Wireless Connection.
Click Search for An Access Point.
Your Wii will then briefly check for access points, then show a screen saying 'Choose the access point you want to connect to'. Click OK.
You will then be shown a list of access points your Wii has found. If the list doesn't show the network you want to use you can click Try again.
When you find a network you want to use click on it.
You'll now see a screen saying 'Do you want to save these settings?' Click OK.
You'll then see a screen saying 'Connection settings have been saved'. Choose OK to start a connection test.
Your Wii will now test the connection.
If the connection is successful you will see a screen saying 'Connection test was successful. Perform a Wii system update now?'
Your Wii may sometimes say that an update is available when it isn't. If this happens you will see a message saying 'There are no updates available for this Wii since it already has the most current system software'.
Go Back to Wii System Settings. Click on WiiConnect24.
Then click on WiiConnect24 from the list.
Click On and then Confirm.
On the Wii System Settings 2 page click the right arrow (>).
On the Wii System Settings 3 page click Wii System Update. You'll now see a screen saying 'Connect to the Internet and perform a Wii system update?'
Click Yes.
Your connection will be tested – this will take a few seconds.
You should then see a screen saying 'There are no updates available for this Wii since it already has the most current system software'.
You've now connected your Wii!

3. Common problems with wireless connections

If you receive errors during connection or get slow download times you should:

1. Try changing your router's broadcast channel
The majority of routers broadcast on channel 6, however to change the download speed it is worth changing your wireless router to either channels 1 or 11. You should be able to find your channel settings in your router's setup section - check in 'Wireless Settings'

You should also check whether your router broadcast settings are set to 'G', 'B', or 'Mixed'. The best results are usually found by using 'Mixed', but you should try 'G' and 'B' too, to see if these improve your network connection.

2. Check where your router is placed
Make sure that your router is situated in a central location in your property, not on the floor or close to a wall.

3. Check and minimise interference (where possible)
Interference can be caused by:

Electrical devices/household items - Move your router away from any objects which could cause interference when being used. These include, mobile and cordless phones, some microwaves, wireless keyboards and headphones, mirrors and metal objects such as cabinets. Try and avoid running electronic devices using the 2.4GHz frequency whilst you are trying to make a wireless connection with your Wii.
Other wireless router activity - There may be other people in your area causing interference with their routers. When you searched for an available access point did you see other network names come up on screen?

4. Buy a hi-gain antenna/wireless repeater

A hi-gain antenna - helps to concentrate a network signal in a certain direction. You may find this helps to point a stronger signal to your Wii, if your wireless connection constantly drops or is slow.
A wireless repeater - this boosts the wireless range, again providing a stronger signal which will help to cut through interference.

5. Check that your router is compatible for use with your Wii
There are some known issues with particular makes and models of router, which are listed below. You may need to download a system update to be able to successfully make a wireless connection to the Internet.

Wired & wireless connection

There are 2 ways to connect your PlayStation 3 to the Internet; using a wired (Ethernet) connection or through a wireless connection.

1. Wired Connection

1. Make sure that your PlayStation 3 is connected to a broadband-enabled network using an Ethernet cable.

2. Click Settings in the Home menu, then Network Settings.

3. Click Internet Connection Settings . Then press the button.

4. A message will pop up saying that you will be disconnected from the Internet. Choose Yes. Then press the button.

5. When you are given the choice of connection methods choose Wired Connection.

6. Choose Easy - the basic settings are automatically set.

7. Now click Save.

8. If you want to you can now test your wired connection by clicking Test Connection. Your PlayStation 3 will now try and connect to the Internet. If the connection isn’t successful you should follow the instructions which will appear, to check your settings.

2. Wireless Connection

1. Click Settings in the Home menu, then Network Settings.

2. Click Internet Connection Settings . Then press the button.

3. A message will pop up saying that you will be disconnected from the Internet. Choose Yes. Then press the button.

4. When you are given the choice of connection methods choose Wireless Connection.

5. Now choose Scan. Your PlayStation 3 will now search for any available access points and show these in a list.

Note: Some PlayStation 3 models have an 'Automatic' option, which if followed will complete the required settings for you automatically. Simply click on Automatic if the access point you are using supports automatic setup.

6. From the list of access points choose one which you’d like to use.

7. Check the SSID for the access point, press the right button. If you don’t know what the SSID is then you should contact the person who setup or runs the access point for more information.

8. Select the security method necessary, press the right button.

9. Enter the encryption key. This will be shown as a series of asterisks (*). If you don’t know what the encryption key is you should contact the person who setup or runs the access point for more information.

10. Now press the right button.

11. Choose either Easy or Custom and adjust the settings.

Easy - the basic settings are automatically set.
Custom – you will need to enter the settings manually.

12. Now click Save.

13. If you want to you can now test your wireless connection by clicking Test Connection. If the connection isn’t successful you should follow the instructions which will appear, to check your settings.

There are 3 ways to connect to Xbox LIVE and play games with people across the world using your Xbox 360:

Wired Router
Wireless Router
Internet Connection Sharing (Windows Only)

1. Wired Router

This is probably the easiest way to connect your Xbox 360 to your network. You can use a 1-port router but you'll need to switch it between your computer and Xbox 360 as you use them.

You'll need:

A 1-port or 4-port router
1 standard Ethernet cable

1. Connect the Ethernet cable to an Ethernet port on your router.

2. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the back of your Xbox 360.

3. Switch on your Xbox 360. If you've already created a gamer profile, your Xbox will connect to Xbox LIVE and open the Spotlight tab.

If this is the first time you've used your Xbox 360 you'll need to create a gamer profile before you can connect - follow the on-screen instructions to do this.

2. Wireless Router

1. Connect your Wireless adaptor to your Xbox 360 and put the antenna up.

2. Switch on your Xbox 360. From here the steps will differ depending on which version of the Xbox 360 system software you're using, most people will have the New Xbox Experience software installed.

New Xbox Experience (NXE)

1. Press up or down until you get to My Xbox. Press right to scroll through the options until you get to System Settings and press A.

2. From the System Settings screen, choose Network Settings then Configure Network.

3. From here, highlight the wireless information block and press A. Then select Scan for Networks.

4. Select the name (SSID) of your wireless network. If your router isn't broadcasting this, choose Specify Unlisted Network and enter the name.

5. If your network has wireless security, enter your WEP or WPA key. Press Start when you're done.

6. You'll be taken back to the Network Settings screen. Select Test Xbox LIVE connection to make sure everything is working properly.

Testing connection

7. From now on your Xbox 360 will connect to Xbox LIVE automatically and open the Spotlight tab each time you switch it on.

Original System Software

1. Press right on your joypad until you get to the System Blade. From here choose Network Settings.

2. From the Network Settings menu, choose Edit Settings.

3. From the Edit Settings screen, highlight and select the wireless settings block at the bottom.

4. Select the name (SSID) of your wireless network. If your router isn't broadcasting this, choose Specify Unlisted Network and enter the name

5. Enter the appropriate security settings and password - check your router instructions if you're not sure about this. Press Start button when you're done.

9. On the Apply Settings page choose Test Xbox LIVE. You'll see a screen telling you that your Xbox 360 is connected.

10. Your Xbox 360 will want to download the NXE software once it's connected. You'll not be able to sign in to Xbox LIVE until your system has updated.

3. Internet Connection Sharing (Windows Only)

If you're using a USB modem then you'll need to use Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to get your Xbox connected.

With this method you'll need your computer switched on whenever you want to connect to Xbox LIVE.

To do this you'll need:

A network interface card (NIC) in your computer
1 crossover Ethernet cable

1. Connect one end of your Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on your computer.

2. Then connect the other end to the Ethernet port on your Xbox 360.

3. Setup Windows ICS on your PC to share your Internet connection - (these instructions are for Windows XP):

On your computer, open the Network and Dial-up Connections folder
Right-click on your Internet Connection and select Properties
From the Properties window, click the Advanced Tab
Tick Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection. If your computer has more than one network adapter, you'll need to select the one to use for sharing the Internet connection.
Click OK. If your LAN network adapter already has an IP address assigned, Windows will warn you that it will change the IP. Click Yes to continue.

Once you've set up ICS make sure you can still get online with your PC.

4. Switch on your Xbox 360. If you've already created a gamer profile, your Xbox will connect to Xbox LIVE and open the Spotlight tab.

If this is the first time you've used your Xbox 360 you'll need to create a gamer profile before you can connect - follow the on-screen instructions to do this.

Your broadband will always try to connect at the highest possible speed available on your telephone line, which is why we refer to our broadband services as 'Up to' a certain speed.

Our standard broadband technology is capable of up to 100Mb speeds. What you'll actually get is determined by:

Distance from your telephone exchange: A standard phone line can be several miles long, from your local exchange to your address. Shorter phone lines can support higher speeds. So, the longer the phone line the slower the speed.
If your telephone exchange has been upgraded: Many exchanges have been upgraded to ADSL2+, meaning that faster speeds can be provided.
The quality of your telephone line: A phone line consists of 2 insulated copper conductors twisted round each other. Damaged, corroded copper or poor connections between cables will mean poorer speeds.
Your broadband product: You'll either get:
- Up to 100Mb - available on all current products for new signups, account changes, those migrating to us, as well as previously sold products.
- Up to 20Mb - if you're on an older account type or your line can't support an Up to 100Mb service.

Our fibre broadband technology is capable of up to 40Mb speeds. What you'll actually get is determined by:

Distance from your green cabinet: Fibre optic cabling runs from your local telephone exchange to your nearest green cabinet. A short standard copper phone line then runs from the green cabinet to your address. Shorter phone lines can support higher speeds. So, the longer the phone line the slower the speed.
The quality of your phone line: The short length of copper phone line between your nearest green street cabinet and your address consists of 2 insulated copper conductors twisted round each other. Damaged, corroded copper or poor connections between cables will mean poorer speeds.

When you sign up, move house or switch broadband product we'll give you an estimate of the speed you should be getting. We'll show this to you as:

A single estimated speed - e.g. 6Mb (note: this is only accurate to within +/-1 Mbits)
An estimated speed range - e.g. 3.5 to 5Mb

How broadband works

Terminology

The term broadband simply means a broad band of frequencies has been used. It is a radio term and normally means that multiple frequency carriers are used to carry one signal. It describes the way ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) services work so has become a term to describe a fast internet connection. The term is then being rather confusingly used to describe fibre connections which are not broadband at all, but use a single frequency laser.

Frequency

Normal telephone service is an analogue of sound waves. It carries sound using electrical signals that work in the same way as they do though air. In terms of frequency this means that telephone calls use very low frequency signals on the telephone line.

The line itself can carry signals at a much higher frequency. The limiting factor is the quality and length of the cable used. Normal telephone lines are a copper pair (two insulated copper conductors twisted around each other) that can go for several miles from the local telephone exchange to your premises.

ADSL makes use of the rest of the capabilities of the cable. It carries data using a wide range of frequencies much higher than that used for telephone calls. The fact that it uses this broad band of frequencies is why it is called broadband.

Adapting to the line characteristics

One of the key features of ADSL is that it can adapt to work on a variety of line quality and lengths. A long line cannot carry the same range of signals as a short line. Lines can also suffer from specific interference which only affects some frequency bands. So the line will sync to start with.

Syncing means that each end sends a range of different signals and the other end reports back what it can hear. This allows the modems at both ends to work out what the line can handle, and what frequencies work. For each of hundreds of different frequency bands the modems agree how many bits of data can be carried at a time in that band.

What this means is that the line can work at different speeds depending on the length and quality of the line. If, over time, the line characteristics change the line will have to re-sync which usually means a short outage in service.

Margins

Re-syncs are a pain as they normally mean a broadband service stops for several seconds to re-establish the line characteristics. This is not generally a good thing. To help avoid re-syncs the initial measurements of the line characteristics are adjusted to allow a margin. This means not all of the line's capabilities are used. If the line degrades over time, and that degradation is within this margin, then no re-sync is needed.

Some lines are very stable, having the same characteristics all of the time. These lines need very low margins. However some lines vary a lot, and this can be over a daily cycle depending on temperature or weather conditions which affect the performance of the line and levels of interference affecting the line. Such lines need higher margins.

There is an automatic system to establish that a line is re-syncing a lot and adjust the margin to be higher in future. This is called Dynamic Line Management (DLM) and runs all of the time. It can take a few days for a new line to get the right margins for stable operation when first install, but in practice it is rarely more than the first few hours.

Interleaving

The margin on the line sync helps accommodate general changes in the performance of a line over time. However there can be interference that is more like "pops and clicks". Impulse interference that causes corruption of data. This causes packets to be lost and resent and so has the effect of making the overall performance of the line slower.

To accommodate this type of interference a system of error correction is used. This means extra parity data is sent, and if data is corrupted then this can be identified and corrected. It uses a small amount of the available bandwidth to provide this extra parity data but makes the line much less prone to errors. At the same time the data is interleaved. This means overlapping each block of data with the next and is the same trick used on CDs to make them resist the effects of scratches on the surface. The effect is higher latency (the time taken for data to get through the ADSL).

ADSL1

ADSL has been defined for use along side normal phone service as well as along side ISDN. The different frequency for ISDN means it is a different standard. In Canada we use ADSL over POTS (Plain Ordinary Telephone Service) following ITU G.922.1 Annex A which allows in theory up to 12Mb/s downstream and 1.3Mb/s upstream. However BT offer only 8.128Mb/s downstream and 832Kb/s upstream maximum using ADSL1.

ADSL2+

A new standard for ADSL called ADSL2+ provides extended bandwidth. This follows ITU G.992.5 and provides up to 24Mb/s downstream and 1Mb/s upstream.

A variation of the ADSL2+ specification called Annex M allows up to 24Mb/s downstream and up to 3.5Mb/s upstream. In Canada we cannot achieve the full 3.5Mb/s upstream as there is a frequency plan that must be followed on all phone lines to avoid interference. Therefore, in Canada, Annex M allows around 2Mb/s uplink.

Upgrade to 21CN

Existing lines on 20CN will be upgraded to 21CN and so allow ADSL2+. This is part of an ongoing programme. The upgrade may be some months after ADSL2+ is available on the exchange, and so customers can pay a small fee to upgrade sooner if the exchange is ready. Upgrades as part of our upgrade programme are free of charge and we email you several weeks in advance with details. When we upgrade we initially keep your line on ADSL1 on the new 21CN kit, and then change to ADSL2+ a few days later.

Beyond the exchange

The ADSL/broadband bit connects between your premises and the local telephone exchange, at which point the line is split between voice (for telephone calls) and ADSL. The local exchange is connected via fibre to one of 20 main interconnect points where a large fibre back-haul network connects back via gigabit fibre links to our rack in a data centre in Docklands. We are then connected by fibre so that we can communicate directly with Canadian based ISPs as well as international (transit) links to the rest of the world.

We cover 50 states and 2 provinces by leasing the most reliable Digital Subscriber Lines and Fibre Optic Lines. If a line is not 100% reliable then we do not qualify it, as simple as ABC.
